Attend a course Animal Experimentation: Welfare, Legislation and Ethical Committees and Evaluation of Projects

The project seeks to advance the education and training of professionals responsible for animal welfare in laboratory settings. By attending the course *"Animal Experimentation: Welfare, Legislation and Ethical Committees and Evaluation of Projects"*, which is accredited by FELASA, the project aims to equip participants with the skills necessary for project evaluation and ethical oversight in animal research. The knowledge gained will enhance the quality of ethical reviews, with a focus on the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement), aligning Brazilian practices with international standards. The dissemination of findings through workshops, presentations, and institutional training will foster a culture of animal welfare in Brazil, contributing to better scientific and ethical practices in laboratory animal science.

Certificate course in Laboratory Animal Science

As of now few organizations in India have such a training program for the researchers. In India, at present, there are limited training courses in LAS, one of them is at TANUVAS (Tamilnadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University) who has FELASA accredited course “International Course in Laboratory Animal Sciences” (ICLAS) another one is at CSIR-IGIB (CSIR-Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology) which is a two-week course titled “International Course in Laboratory Animal Science” (ICLAS) and NBRC also has also organized one such course named “Certificate course in Laboratory Animal Science”. These courses are not sufficient in India to cater the increasing demand for researchers working with laboratory animals as they have limited participation (only 30 participants/course) and organized only once in a year, So depending upon the geography and increasing number of researchers who want to pursue their research in laboratory animals we need to have few more courses in India to cope up with the increasing demand and also to perform animal experiments according to the appropriate ethical norms.

36th ed – Advanced Laboratory Animal Science Course (May 2024)

Appropriate training in animal biology, experimental techniques and other relevant topics are prerequisites for responsible conduct with animals in research. In Europe, the standard for such training is set by FELASA (Federation for European Laboratory Animal Science Associations). and is the only FELASA accredited course in Portugal (since 2008). The training combines theory (lectures, seminars, online lectures) with practical sessions and group assignments. The focus is on how to design, plan and carry out experiments to minimize animal harm.

Organise a Summer School for Early Career Researchers on Systematic Reviews of Animal Studies for Evidence-Based Preclinical Research

You may already have heard about the value of systematic reviews of published animal studies, compared with standard narrative reviews of the literature. On this School you will learn all the steps needed to perform a systematic review of your own, including how to perform literature searches, how to manage references, how to screen abstracts, and risk of bias. The School will be led by experts in Systematic Reviews from the University of Zurich, in collaboration with Norecopa and the University of Bergen. The programme for the School may be downloaded here. We recommend that the School is awarded 2 ECTS points by educational establishments. The number of participants is limited to 20, to ensure best possible individual tuition. Speaker at UFAW International Animal Welfare Conference 2024, 10-11 July 2024, at ICBAS University of Porto, Portugal.

Speaker at UFAW International Animal Welfare Conference 2024. Title of Presentation: Pan-African Network for Laboratory Animal Science and Ethics (PAN-LASE): Education and Training in Research/Laboratory Animal Sciences, Welfare and Ethics. The paper seeks to disseminate information and knowledge on the education / training activities of PAN-LASE (a non-profit education/training organization) across Africa by educating and entrenching animal welfare and ethics in the care and use of research animals. PAN-LASE has conducted this training for about 6years now across some African countries. This has led to the development of animal welfare and the establishment of Animal Ethics Committees (AEC) in some institutions / countries thereby improving humane practices and delivery of quality research that are acceptable by international journals. PAN-LASE trainings are based on 3Rs principles delivered in 'Train the Trainer' model. Bayero University Kano, Nigeria; Universty of Ibadan, Nigeria; Makerere University, Uganda; Institute of Primate Research Nairobi, Kenya among many others are example of institutions that have established AECs.
