European Medical Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is world class laboratory with high caliber scientists and high-tech instruments in area of Molecular and Cancer Biology. It has a state-of-the-art laboratory space in an exciting academic environment. So, visiting EMBL will create me a chance to attend EMBO Practical Course: Humanized Mice in Biomedicine: Challenges and Innovations to be held in EMBL Advanced Training Centre in Heidelberg, Germany from 3 – 8 November, 2019.
This practical course will be given by scientists on the area and it includes lectures, lab activities using humanized mice: isolation of cells and tissues, analysis of cell panels by flow cytometry, as well as histological and molecular analyses. In addition, the value and impact of these models on the biology and therapy of cancers will be discussed.
Importantly, my PhD work has involved the use of physiologically relevant orthotopic in vivo models, and isolation and preparation of tissues for physiologically relevant models (i.e. PDX). Specifically, I have to use these models to assess a novel therapeutic approach to inhibit the bi-directional oncogenic cross-talk between cancer cells and the surrounding stroma in pancreatic cancer. This presents a novel approach to pancreatic cancer treatment that can potentially overcome the major problems attributed to desmoplasia, including therapeutic resistance and metastasis.
So, it is a practical specialty that fulfils my considerable interest in in vivo animal model through practical training on in vivo modelling using patient-derived xenografts (PDX) of solid tumours. It will undoubtedly take my in vivo mice study skill to the next level. Thus, it will provide me with an extremely valuable opportunity to support my PhD research and prepares me for future career as an international researcher on in vivo mice model.
It will also serve as an ideal platform for me to meet and potentially establish collaborations with experts in this area of research, which is directly relevant to my PhD study. Overall, attending this practical course will provide me with an extremely valuable opportunity to support my PhD research and also foster my development as an international researcher, preparing me for a successful future career.
As an international student at the University of Sydney, my PhD scholarship does not cover any expenses related to travel and conference or course attendance. Hence, this travel fund would be of tremendous assistance in terms of covering my registration costs, accommodation and travel expenses, which are high as I will be travelling from Australia. |

The purpose of my Ph.D.-project is to investigate mechanisms involved in chronic pain. I focus on a cell type that under normal conditions support our pain-sensing nerve cells but are proposed to contribute to the painful sensation that follows physical injury or chemotherapy treatment.
By investigating the response in this cell type following physical injury or chemotherapy, we will come one step closer to understanding how nerve cells in some cases are affected to signal more intense or chronic pain.
Animal Experiments are essential for investigating my questions at hand, and often require a surgical procedure on the sciatic nerve to evoke neuropathic pain in the laboratory animal. When I perform this procedure, it is crucial that I excel, to minimize suffering in the experimental animal. Therefore, I apply for funding to participate in Ph.D. courses to develop my skills in experimental surgery. |

"Too many pre-clinical experiments are giving results which cannot be reproduced. This may be because the experiments are incorrectly designed. In “Completely randomized” (CR) and “Randomised block” (RB) experimental designs, both the assignment of treatments to experimental subjects and the order in which the experiment is done, are randomly determined. These designs have been used successfully in agricultural and industrial research and in clinical trials for nearly a century without excessive levels of irreproducibility. They must also be used in pre-clinical research if the excessive level of irreproducibility is to be eliminated.
A survey of 100 papers involving mice and rats was used to determine whether scientists had used the CR or RB designs. The papers were assigned to three categories “Design acceptable”, “Randomised to treatment groups”, so of doubtful validity, or “Room for improvement”. Only 32±4.7% of the papers fell into the first group, although none of them actually named either the CR or RB design.
If the current high level of irreproducibility is to be eliminated, it is essential that scientists engaged in pre-clinical research use “Completely randomised” (CR), “Randomised block” (RB), or one of the more specialised named experimental designs described in textbooks on the subject."

I am the Experimental Unit Manager, at the Research Animal Facility.
• Provide Refinement of Care Standards for Experimental Unit animals, to ensure compliance with ethical, welfare, legal, health and safety and operational requirements for conducting world-class research in South Africa’s largest academic research animal facility.• To provide the UCT Research Animal Facility with dedicated clinical and para-clinical Para-Veterinary support.
• To perform Facility Management of the Experimental Unit laboratories BSL1, BSL 2 and BSL3.
Laboratory Animal Technology formal training was discontinued in South Africa in 1996. And students like me have made use of the (IAT) training through Venture Forward and CLAST to improve ourselves in this field of Laboratory Animal Sciences. CLAST is the only institute that offers the Level 4,5 and 6 Diplomas
To learn new technology and Skill in the Laboratory Animal Science field so I will be able to train the upcoming students in the field. I am a chairperson of the Laboratory Animal Technologist Working Group, and we organize training for the student who are currently registered with Venture Forward doing Level 2 and Leve3 Diplomas. I need to acquire formal qualification a BSC honors degree in Laboratory Animal Science and Technology at the completion of Level 5 and Level 6.
And eventually enroll for a master’s in laboratory animal science degree.
Laboratory Animal Technology was previously offered through Technikon South Africa (TSA) but was discontinued in 1996. Currently there is only 14 LATs registered with SAVC and there are over 42 research institutions needing the services of this profession making it a profession in high demand, and of these 14 registered LAT’s most of them are reaching retirement age within the next +-3 -10 years. Which will result in this scarce skill being lost. |

To attend ‘Species specific Laboratory Animal Science course on poultry and other birds’ offered by Utrecht University |

Animal experiments may only be performed if there are no suitable alternatives. If animals are used, all possible effort should be taken to reduce the number of animals and refine experimental procedures to minimize the discomfort experienced by the animals (following ‘3Rs’ principle). While 3R requirements regarding mammalian species are meanwhile accepted, the welfare of avian species, the study system for my research on prenatal physiological programming, still needs to be promoted. For this, specific knowledge on their behaviour, physiology, husbandry and appropriate experimental procedures is necessary. I will acquire state-of-the-art knowledge by doing a ‘species specific laboratory animal science course on poultry and other birds’ offered by Utrecht University, enabling me to adhere to the highest standards regarding the welfare of birds used in experiments. Being an expat researcher in the Netherlands, this education will enable me to advocate the welfare of avian species in an international context too. |

The paper seeks to disseminate information and knowledge on the education / training activities of PAN-LASE (a non-profit education/training organization) across Africa by educating and entrenching animal welfare and ethics in the care and use of research animals. PAN-LASE has conducted this training for about 6years now across some African countries. This has led to the development of animal welfare and the establishment of Animal Ethics Committees (AEC) in some institutions / countries thereby improving humane practices and delivery of quality research that are acceptable by international journals. PAN-LASE trainings are based on 3Rs principles delivered in 'Train the Trainer' model. Bayero University Kano, Nigeria; Universty of Ibadan, Nigeria; Makerere University, Uganda; Institute of Primate Research Nairobi, Kenya among many others are example of institutions that have established AECs. |

FELASA congress 2019 is a great opportunity for me to gain knowledge in specific areas of laboratory animal health and welfare as well as develop my networking skills. As a future ECLAM diplomate, my attendance at FELASA congress is a wise, helpful and important investment. Animal welfare benefit: all new/refreshing concepts may have a direct applicability since I am training and working with laboratory animals and research in a daily basis. Moreover, my research project (accepted for poster presentation) may have a high social relevance because researchers could potentially use an innovative in vivo technique based on two of the fundamental 3Rs, i.e., reduction and refinement, which are also in line with good scientific practice and current legislation requirements (i.e. implementation of the 3R’s). Lecture of the most outstanding sessions in the congress: I am planning to give a presentation for both NVS and researchers within the animal welfare group department at the Royal Veterinary College (my home institution). In this way, attendees could improve their knowledge about new approaches to the laboratory animal field and implementation of the 3Rs. |

I would like to apply for funding to speak at the FELASA Conference that will take place in Prague in June 2019. During this talk I will present the findings of an experiment I carried out during my PhD which I successfully completed in June 2018. In this experiment we investigated the effects of sanitizing gloves with alcohol before handling mice on mouse welfare behavioural indicators. We observed mice before and after handling them with nitrile gloves thatwere sprayed with 70% Ethanol or that were not sprayed with anything. Additionally, we assessed how these handling methods affected home cage behaviour. The increased wall rearing displayed by both strains and the defensive burying performed by C57BL/6J mice during the anticipation of handling when alcohol was present suggested that mice perceived this scent as threatening or aversive. It is paramount to share these results with those working with laboratory mice to raise awareness of this issue and to encourage looking for less aversive hand sanitising methods and. |

The Society for Experimental Biology has agreed that I can organize a one-day satellite symposium on animal sentience (where sentience is defined as the ability to experience pain, psychological distress and positive emotions such as pleasure) either before or after its international main meeting in 2020. This will explore:
- The neuroanatomical basis for ascribing sentience to non-human animals
- Evidence for sentience in different species and developmental stages
- What further research may be needed to help further understanding of animal sentience
- What additional moral duties towards animals might arise for a range of stakeholders (including life scientists and the public) as a consequence of current, and future, understanding of animal sentience
Three speakers have already agreed and I have some funding from the SEB towards their travel and accommodation, but with extra funding from LAL I could attract additional speakers to maximize the benefit from the meeting. |

The European Society of Laboratory Animal Veterinarians (ESLAV) and the European College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ECLAM) are concerned with the poor reproducibility of animal studies (Freedman 2015). Veterinarians are well equipped to support, organise and supervise better animal research, e.g. by implementing ARRIVE guidelines and thus improve its reproducibility. Institutional and research veterinarians helping the design, conduct, and analysis of future animal experiments may optimise them through the application of sound experimental design and the statistics required for these common designs. By having an understanding of experimental design and statistics, the veterinarian will be contributing to improve methodological quality of animal experiments, making the choice of a particular experimental design, the required numbers of animals based on that design and the translation of animal data to the clinic more evidence-based, and implementing the 3Rs, especially reduction. Most institutional veterinarians, designated veterinarians (DVs) and veterinarians working in research, in a supporting role or being principal investigators themselves, will benefit from training on understanding the most common experimental designs and statistics applied. What is more, most institutions do not have an advisor statistician in their ethics committees. Thus, institutional veterinarians and DVs are well placed to help with the optimisation and reproducibility of experiments at their own institutions by providing some advice on experimental design and common statistics used for these designs. |

The directive 2010/63/EU estates in its article 25, Designated veterinarian establish the role of the veterinarian in animal facilities, i.e., ‘advisory duties in relation to the well-being and treatment of the animals’. Whereas other areas of the world have well delineated the role of this veterinarian, i.e. chapter four of The Guide in the USA and Canada, the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in the UK; in Europe there is a lack of harmonisation and depends not only on the Competent Authority of the country but also on the institution employing the veterinarian the description of the role and the extend to the veterinarian authority.
There is thus a need for a harmonised guidance on the role of the Designated Veterinarian across Europe.
This FELASA session will help to feed the experience of the European emerging countries in these recommendations for the Designated Veterinarian role. |

Organize a 1-day symposium “We have to talk about rodent surgery” |

Surgery is an integral part of many animal experiments and
1-day symposium “We have to talk about rodent surgery”, 12 June 2022, Marseille, France
Surgery is an integral part of many experimental studies. Planning must incorporate training, aseptic technique, anaesthesia and analgesia, and peri-operative care. Expert surgical practices result in measurably better outcomes and improved experimental validity.
Rodent surgery is challenging and expensive. The animals are very small and require appropriate instruments and equipment. There are many choices to make when selecting anaesthetics and analgesics in a variety of situations. Post-operative care is crucial to the animal’s health and welfare. And personnel require constant training and improvement to ensure the best possible results.
For experimental surgeons no consistent training or certification standards are applied throughout Europe and rodent surgeons often did not receive a fundamental surgical training because they are not medical scientists. Additionally, there is a clear need to increase communication in order to better promote exchange of knowledge and expertise within the surgical research community, to define standards and to develop guidelines for good surgical practice and training as well as to train experimental surgeons in a standardised and certified manner.
This one-day symposium will offer practical guidance from international experts on solutions for state-of-the-art rodent surgery. The speakers are all well-known international experts in rodent surgery and perioperative care. ExpoBioterios (EB) Hybrid will be a face-to-face and virtual event. The Conference will be held in the Metropolitan Autonomous University in Xochimilco – Mexico (face-to-face) and the streaming hosted on a platform that will enhance the interaction of the attendees with the speakers. The scheduled days for the event will be June 14th, 15th and 16th, 2023.
The presentations will be in spanish. These talks will be available on-demand for the attendees.
Registration for EB has a cost of US $ 30-75. However, we will provide scholarships for all those who need support.
Five benefits that ExpoBioterios brings to the science of laboratory animals.
1- Change of perspective: The current world situation is causing many of the scientific conferences that allow the training of personnel working in animal science to be diminished by its cancellation. EB Hybrid ensures a change in the way of developing scientific events, favoring professional growth and training of personnel working in the field of animal science.
2- Receive immediate feedback: At EB Hybrid the divulgation of animal science has the advantage of being able to receive almost immediate feedback. You can participate in forums, chat with colleagues around the world, propose topics and you can quickly receive a response, a comment, advice or constructive criticism. All this quickly improves and refines the concepts and skills of the staff working in the field of the laboratory animal. You will be able to share with colleagues about your area of research, work or topics of interest.
3- Interrelationships: Leaving your animal facility to a virtual space, communicating your poster to a different audience and receiving their response, asking the speaker, all this allows creating interrelationships, both personal and between specialties, that connect the assistant with professionals from other specialties.
4- Posters: EB Hybrid attendees can present their posters, participants can easily find them through a search engine by title, subject or author. You can see the full image, or the summary or summary of the free work. In addition, they can leave comments to contact the main author. This will allow scientific divulgation in the region to continue at a good pace, even during a pandemic.
5- Commercial promoter of the region: EB Hybrid will have a trade show area at the height of any international event. This allows reactivating the commercial sector related to animal science. |

Department of Zoology and Environment Sciences, Faculty of Science, University of Colombo facilitates teaching and research to over 400 undergraduates and postgraduate students annually. However, there is an unmet need of establishing a good culture of care in our animal facility which is the only lab animal facility of our faculty. Culture of care not only involves animal welfare but also the welfare of the personnel involved. Therefore, our first goal is to get our staff trained through Sri Lanka Association for Laboratory Animal Science’s annual training courses and equip the facility with new instruments as what we use currently are over 20 years old. Collectively, we believe that empowering the staff with adequate knowledge and equipping our facility will pave the way to establish and maintain a good culture in the facility and help to inculcate the 3Rs concept & promote humane animal experimentation in our young scientists. |

A proper education and training is the best way to improve our work and animal welfare. LAS in Spain is a very dynamic field and there are many education and training activities, however, our country has a traditional lack of English language skills. These articles in Spanish will help people without a proper level of English to improve their knowledge. LAS professionals living in several Latin-American countries will benefit also with this action. |

ACURET CAGE CONSORTIUM PROJECT |

The housing environment of laboratory animals has been demonstrated to have a significant influence on the behaviour, physiology, pathology and brain development of the animals housed within thereby potentially impacting upon the comparability and reproducibility of the data generated. Regrettably, there is poor investment in lab animal research infrastructure in many developing countries. The result is unwholesome housing environment which lab animals are subjected to, and the poor quality of science generated from animal-based experimentations from many Africa countries.
ACURET advanced the Cage Consortium project, to seek the support and assistance of Institutions and lab animal Industry abroad to donate used but functional ‘fit for purpose’ cages and other equipment to address the issue of the poor state of lab animal husbandry and improve the lives of laboratory animals held within animal facilities in many African Institutions, to promote humane animal care and use for scientific purposes in developing countries. |

The joint Working Group FELASA-EFAT on “Harmonisation of education, training and CPD for laboratory animal caretakers and technicians” has finalized the work. The members of the Working Group, Klas Abelson (Convenor), Tereasa De La Cueva, Friedemann Pohlig, Delphine Grézel, Vasileios Ntafis, Ana Isabel Santos, Martin Heath, Pim Rooymans, Glyn Fisher, Charlie Chambers have written the report which was submitted to “Laboratory Animals” (LA-23-051) for publication.
FELASA working group reports must not be submitted for publication without approval of the FELASA Member Delegates (MDs). Therefore, the draft of the present report was distributed to FELASA Member Associations for revision and comments. The reviewers are experts in the field. Furthermore, the draft has also been circulated among members of EFAT for further comments and revisions.
The authors have addressed all comments made by the reviewers and FELASA MDs and the Executive Committee (EC) has approved the present version of the report.
It is mandatory that FELASA WG manuscript must published as peer reviewed scientific papers with open access CC-BY in order to reach immediately the maximum number of professionals involved in the use of laboratory animals – and to include a reprint on the FELASA website. FELASA is a no-profit organization with limited resources. The money necessary for covering open access fees of FELASA recommendations will reduce the reserves for other tasks. This specific action is fully coincident with the aims of Laboratory Animals Limited to promote education and training in laboratory animal science, medicine, technology, and welfare. |

This project aims to develop educational materials and translate them into laboratory course. We will design and create audiovisual tutorials to teach several techniques in modern neuroscience research, including viral strategy approaches, live brain tissue preparations, and multiplex imaging, which are essential and widely used in state-of-the-art science. The materials will be implemented in the MSc module in neuroscience focused on applied experimental approaches in health and disease at University College London. They will enhance the education and training of students who typically lack experience in laboratory studies and come from a wide range of backgrounds. The tutorials developed by trained researchers will promote the 3Rs, given the complex nature of techniques and breakthrough technologies used in current neuroscience; they will improve the educational process for better learning outcomes. This will help advance future-oriented neuroscience education and promote transformative practices in laboratory animal science. |

The International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology in Warsaw is the only Polish research institution that offers continuous theoretical training in English for international scientists planning to perform experimental work with laboratory animals in Poland. The course, developed in 2016 as an internal course for own employees not speaking Polish, since 2022 is open to all foreigners as a non-profit e-learning training. The course meets the requirements of national and European law on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes and has accreditation of PolLASA (the Polish member of FELASA).
The project will result in much needed modernization and upgrade of this training. We intend to incorporate updated material of European quality and organize the course in more user-friendly manner. We want to add emphasis on practical applications of the 3Rs principles and alternative methods. The ameliorated course will improve qualifications of researchers and wellbeing of animals. |

In Indonesia, there is a significant increase in the number of studies using laboratory animals, especially mice and rats. The Integrated laboratory for research and testing, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) is a central facility which is facilitating breeding and research not only from UGM but also universities around UGM and also from eastern part of Indonesia (East Java, Bali, and Nusa Tenggara). Data from the Integrated Laboratory for Research and Testing knew in the last four years (2016,2017,2018, September 2019) the number of studies using laboratory animals in total is 465 studies.
The obstacles we face regarding this activity are 1) the limited ability, skills and knowledge of trainers (veterinarians and technicians); 2) Not all trainers who provide training have participated in certification or training related to LAS; 3) There is no regulation in the form of special requirements for researchers who carry out research using laboratory animals must take LAS training as a prerequisite; 4) Not all animal facilities within UGM or other universities in Yogyakarta have veterinarian attendees.
To overcome the obstacles we face, we propose a 2-week course on Laboratory Animal Scince. This course will disseminate basic knowledge, skills and expertise required for such experiments. The Integrated Laboratory for Research and Testing will organizing the 2-week course of the course in collaboration with the Department of Laboratory Animal Science of Utrecht University of the Netherlands, Justus Liebig University, Germany and the Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (IGIB) of India. |

Laboratory Animal Science is a highly specialized and rapidly evolving field in biomedical science. Since Laboratory Animal Science has an enormously broad scope and a high impact on research with animals, competence in this field should urgently be promoted and provided
in India. It is our effort to train the future scientists in the field of Laboratory Animal Science to improve their understanding and practice of scientific methods as well as implementation of animal welfare prior to their actual work with live animals.
Keeping in the view of the target groups we have designed this course based on FELASA (Federation of European Laboratory Animal Science Associations) category C recommendations suited to our Indian conditions for veterinarians, Medicos, biologists, biochemists, physicians and other researchers initiating (directing or carrying out) projects based on laboratory animal experimentation. |

Many African countries are using the development of their Pharma industry as a route to economic development. Attention to animal welfare and care, and experimental design is critical in ensuring that these animal studies translate into clinical practice. However, Africa has an extreme shortage of individuals with the knowledge and skills to care for and use research animals. This deficit is a Grand Challenge in itself, hindering the ability of Africa to undertake world-leading research to address its specific health challenges. Opportunities for education and training in research animal sciences across the continent are extremely fragmented and restricted to specific countries. Animal ethics committees are in their infancy or non-existent. There have been limited interventions, led principally by the applicants, to address this knowledge and skills Grand Challenge.
However, such training modalities can’t cover long term lagged need of the community and professionals. Therefore, setting up online training for Ethiopian as well as African scientists and biomedical graduate students has a paramount role to improve biomedical research and an ethical review process and to give proper attention to animal welfare. |

2023 ESLAV Winter School on Laboratory Animal Genetics |
Fernando Jose Benavides |
ireland |
[email protected] |
4.000 |
The course aims to provide the tools for animal facility staff to understand and being able to advice on laboratory animal genetics taking the rodents as teaching models. As lab animal technical staff and veterinarians play a central role supporting good practice and in many cases advising on good scientific research, this training event will very much contribute to improving such provision. The knowledge and training gained in the winter school will be taken away by participants and applied in each and every scientific establishment where they work, on a daily basis. In addition, many will be actively seeking opportunities to publish in scientific journals and hence the knowledge gained in the course will percolate into such publications in one way or another.
There are not many opportunities for Designated Veterinarians to train on different aspects of their role in Europe. There are just five residency programmes in Europe (http://eslav-eclam.org/eclam/training/) compared to 47 in the United States (https://www.aclam.org/education-and-training/training-programs). The European Society of Laboratory Animal Veterinarians (ESLAV) and The European College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ECLAM) are setting different forms of training and trying to cover that gap. This Winter School is one of such initiatives. Also, there are no training opportunities for laboratory animal veterinarians in Ireland.
This initiative will not only be open to veterinarians but to scientists and technical staff working with animals. |

Dear Professor,
Myself, Madhan Tamizharasan. I have completed my Bachelor's of Pharmacy and my Master’s in Medical Biotechnology at UPO, Italy.
Currently, I'm pursuing my Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's Degree in Human Diseases with Morphological Phenotyping in Mouse Models (MorphoPHEN, Veterinary Medicine) at the University of Barcelona.
During my Erasmus, I'm studying Human diseases and morphological phenotyping on a mouse model. So I have basic ideas of Human and Animal anatomy, Pathobiology, Embryology, Dissections, etc.
In Italy, I got an opportunity to learn and perform imaging techniques (PET, CT, US, MRI, X-ray on animal models (Mouse and Rats). I've also obtained my FELASA A accreditation to perform experiments on mouse models.
So it would be very helpful if I get any funding possibilities for pursuing my FELASA functions. That could be my Thesis as well.
I hope I can fulfill your expectations.
I have good communication and leadership skills. I'm a more open-minded and dedicated person.
I'm looking for opportunities where I can learn something and improve my skills.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

The FRAME/UoN Training School in Experimental Design aims to increase awareness among scientists about the need to consider opportunities to replace animal models, reduce animal numbers in experiments and to refine procedures. Participants gain a better understanding of how to properly design and effectively analyse their experimental programmes so that they can go on to produce higher quality science, which has made the most efficient use of a minimum number of animals. The programme is structured to lead the participants from simple experimental design and statistical ideas, through more complex methods and analysis to effective presentation of findings. Participants are also able to discuss their own research problems/experiences with the Training School tutors. This interactive approach strengthens and supplements the information given in the more traditional lectures and creates a collaborative and active learning environment. The residential nature of the School also fosters networking and dissemination of information between participants. |

Certificate course in Laboratory Animal Science |

As of now few organizations in India have such a training program for the researchers. In India, at present, there are limited training courses in LAS, one of them is at TANUVAS (Tamilnadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University) who has FELASA accredited course “International Course in Laboratory Animal Sciences” (ICLAS) another one is at CSIR-IGIB (CSIR-Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology) which is a two-week course titled “International Course in Laboratory Animal Science” (ICLAS) and NBRC also has also organized one such course named “Certificate course in Laboratory Animal Science”. These courses are not sufficient in India to cater the increasing demand for researchers working with laboratory animals as they have limited participation (only 30 participants/course) and organized only once in a year, So depending upon the geography and increasing number of researchers who want to pursue their research in laboratory animals we need to have few more courses in India to cope up with the increasing demand and also to perform animal experiments according to the appropriate ethical norms. |
