It has a state-of-the-art laboratory space in an exciting academic environment. So, visiting EMBL will create me a chance to attend EMBO Practical Course: Humanized Mice in Biomedicine: Challenges and Innovations to be held in EMBL Advanced Training Centre in Heidelberg, Germany from 3 – 8 November, 2019.
This practical course will be given by scientists on the area and it includes lectures, lab activities using humanized mice: isolation of cells and tissues, analysis of cell panels by flow cytometry, as well as histological and molecular analyses. In addition, the value and impact of these models on the biology and therapy of cancers will be discussed.
Importantly, my PhD work has involved the use of physiologically relevant orthotopic in vivo models, and isolation and preparation of tissues for physiologically relevant models (i.e. PDX). Specifically, I have to use these models to assess a novel therapeutic approach to inhibit the bi-directional oncogenic cross-talk between cancer cells and the surrounding stroma in pancreatic cancer. This presents a novel approach to pancreatic cancer treatment that can potentially overcome the major problems attributed to desmoplasia, including therapeutic resistance and metastasis.
So, it is a practical specialty that fulfils my considerable interest in in vivo animal model through practical training on in vivo modelling using patient-derived xenografts (PDX) of solid tumours. It will undoubtedly take my in vivo mice study skill to the next level. Thus, it will provide me with an extremely valuable opportunity to support my PhD research and prepares me for future career as an international researcher on in vivo mice model.
It will also serve as an ideal platform for me to meet and potentially establish collaborations with experts in this area of research, which is directly relevant to my PhD study. Overall, attending this practical course will provide me with an extremely valuable opportunity to support my PhD research and also foster my development as an international researcher, preparing me for a successful future career.
As an international student at the University of Sydney, my PhD scholarship does not cover any expenses related to travel and conference or course attendance. Hence, this travel fund would be of tremendous assistance in terms of covering my registration costs, accommodation and travel expenses, which are high as I will be travelling from Australia. | Individual funding |

2864 | BA467 | 05/10/2020 | 0 | publish | Attend 2 ph.d. courses concerning experimental surgery | Ole Ahlgreen | denmark | ole@biomed.au.dk | 900 | The purpose of my Ph.D.-project is to investigate mechanisms involved in chronic pain. I focus on a cell type that under normal conditions support our pain-sensing nerve cells but are proposed to contribute to the painful sensation that follows physical injury or chemotherapy treatment.
By investigating the response in this cell type following physical injury or chemotherapy, we will come one step closer to understanding how nerve cells in some cases are affected to signal more intense or chronic pain.
Animal Experiments are essential for investigating my questions at hand, and often require a surgical procedure on the sciatic nerve to evoke neuropathic pain in the laboratory animal. When I perform this procedure, it is crucial that I excel, to minimize suffering in the experimental animal. Therefore, I apply for funding to participate in Ph.D. courses to develop my skills in experimental surgery. | Individual funding |

This may be because the experiments are incorrectly designed. In “Completely randomized” (CR) and “Randomised block” (RB) experimental designs, both the assignment of treatments to experimental subjects and the order in which the experiment is done, are randomly determined. These designs have been used successfully in agricultural and industrial research and in clinical trials for nearly a century without excessive levels of irreproducibility. They must also be used in pre-clinical research if the excessive level of irreproducibility is to be eliminated.A survey of 100 papers involving mice and rats was used to determine whether scientists had used the CR or RB designs. The papers were assigned to three categories “Design acceptable”, “Randomised to treatment groups”, so of doubtful validity, or “Room for improvement”. Only 32±4.7% of the papers fell into the first group, although none of them actually named either the CR or RB design. If the current high level of irreproducibility is to be eliminated, it is essential that scientists engaged in pre-clinical research use “Completely randomised” (CR), “Randomised block” (RB), or one of the more specialised named experimental designs described in textbooks on the subject." | Individual funding |

As a future ECLAM diplomate, my attendance at FELASA congress is a wise, helpful and important investment. Animal welfare benefit: all new/refreshing concepts may have a direct applicability since I am training and working with laboratory animals and research in a daily basis. Moreover, my research project (accepted for poster presentation) may have a high social relevance because researchers could potentially use an innovative in vivo technique based on two of the fundamental 3Rs, i.e., reduction and refinement, which are also in line with good scientific practice and current legislation requirements (i.e. implementation of the 3R’s). Lecture of the most outstanding sessions in the congress: I am planning to give a presentation for both NVS and researchers within the animal welfare group department at the Royal Veterinary College (my home institution). In this way, attendees could improve their knowledge about new approaches to the laboratory animal field and implementation of the 3Rs. | Events and conferences |

During this talk I will present the findings of an experiment I carried out during my PhD which I successfully completed in June 2018. In this experiment we investigated the effects of sanitizing gloves with alcohol before handling mice on mouse welfare behavioural indicators. We observed mice before and after handling them with nitrile gloves thatwere sprayed with 70% Ethanol or that were not sprayed with anything. Additionally, we assessed how these handling methods affected home cage behaviour. The increased wall rearing displayed by both strains and the defensive burying performed by C57BL/6J mice during the anticipation of handling when alcohol was present suggested that mice perceived this scent as threatening or aversive. It is paramount to share these results with those working with laboratory mice to raise awareness of this issue and to encourage looking for less aversive hand sanitising methods and. | Events and conferences |

This will explore:
- The neuroanatomical basis for ascribing sentience to non-human animals
- Evidence for sentience in different species and developmental stages
- What further research may be needed to help further understanding of animal sentience
- What additional moral duties towards animals might arise for a range of stakeholders (including life scientists and the public) as a consequence of current, and future, understanding of animal sentience
Three speakers have already agreed and I have some funding from the SEB towards their travel and accommodation, but with extra funding from LAL I could attract additional speakers to maximize the benefit from the meeting. | Events and conferences |
2421 | BA441 | 14/10/2019 | 0 | draft | BA441_Training course “2020 ESLAV-ECLAM Winter School” | Jose Manuel Sanchez Morgado | spain | sanchej@tcd.ie | 5.000 | The European Society of Laboratory Animal Veterinarians (ESLAV) and the European College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ECLAM) are concerned with the poor reproducibility of animal studies (Freedman 2015). Veterinarians are well equipped to support, organise and supervise better animal research, e.g. by implementing ARRIVE guidelines and thus improve its reproducibility. Institutional and research veterinarians helping the design, conduct, and analysis of future animal experiments may optimise them through the application of sound experimental design and the statistics required for these common designs. By having an understanding of experimental design and statistics, the veterinarian will be contributing to improve methodological quality of animal experiments, making the choice of a particular experimental design, the required numbers of animals based on that design and the translation of animal data to the clinic more evidence-based, and implementing the 3Rs, especially reduction. Most institutional veterinarians, designated veterinarians (DVs) and veterinarians working in research, in a supporting role or being principal investigators themselves, will benefit from training on understanding the most common experimental designs and statistics applied. What is more, most institutions do not have an advisor statistician in their ethics committees. Thus, institutional veterinarians and DVs are well placed to help with the optimisation and reproducibility of experiments at their own institutions by providing some advice on experimental design and common statistics used for these designs. | Events and conferences |

The Integrated laboratory for research and testing, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) is a central facility which is facilitating breeding and research not only from UGM but also universities around UGM and also from eastern part of Indonesia (East Java, Bali, and Nusa Tenggara). Data from the Integrated Laboratory for Research and Testing knew in the last four years (2016,2017,2018, September 2019) the number of studies using laboratory animals in total is 465 studies. The obstacles we face regarding this activity are 1) the limited ability, skills and knowledge of trainers (veterinarians and technicians); 2) Not all trainers who provide training have participated in certification or training related to LAS; 3) There is no regulation in the form of special requirements for researchers who carry out research using laboratory animals must take LAS training as a prerequisite; 4) Not all animal facilities within UGM or other universities in Yogyakarta have veterinarian attendees. To overcome the obstacles we face, we propose a 2-week course on Laboratory Animal Scince. This course will disseminate basic knowledge, skills and expertise required for such experiments. The Integrated Laboratory for Research and Testing will organizing the 2-week course of the course in collaboration with the Department of Laboratory Animal Science of Utrecht University of the Netherlands, Justus Liebig University, Germany and the Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (IGIB) of India. | Training courses in countries where Laboratory Animal Science is developing |
