Surgery is an integral part of many animal experiments and 1-day symposium “We have to talk about rodent surgery”, 12 June 2022, Marseille, France Surgery is an integral part of many experimental studies. Planning must incorporate training, aseptic technique, anaesthesia and analgesia, and peri-operative care. Expert surgical practices result in measurably better outcomes and improved experimental validity. Rodent surgery is challenging and expensive. The animals are very small and require appropriate instruments and equipment. There are many choices to make when selecting anaesthetics and analgesics in a variety of situations. Post-operative care is crucial to the animal’s health and welfare. And personnel require constant training and improvement to ensure the best possible results. For experimental surgeons no consistent training or certification standards are applied throughout Europe and rodent surgeons often did not receive a fundamental surgical training because they are not medical scientists. Additionally, there is a clear need to increase communication in order to better promote exchange of knowledge and expertise within the surgical research community, to define standards and to develop guidelines for good surgical practice and training as well as to train experimental surgeons in a standardised and certified manner. This one-day symposium will offer practical guidance from international experts on solutions for state-of-the-art rodent surgery. The speakers are all well-known international experts in rodent surgery and perioperative care. Establishment of a good culture of Care in the Animal Facility of the Department of Zoology and Environment Sciences, Faculty of Science, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka

Department of Zoology and Environment Sciences, Faculty of Science, University of Colombo facilitates teaching and research to over 400 undergraduates and postgraduate students annually. However, there is an unmet need of establishing a good culture of care in our animal facility which is the only lab animal facility of our faculty. Culture of care not only involves animal welfare but also the welfare of the personnel involved. Therefore, our first goal is to get our staff trained through Sri Lanka Association for Laboratory Animal Science’s annual training courses and equip the facility with new instruments as what we use currently are over 20 years old. Collectively, we believe that empowering the staff with adequate knowledge and equipping our facility will pave the way to establish and maintain a good culture in the facility and help to inculcate the 3Rs concept & promote humane animal experimentation in our young scientists.

TO SENSITIZE ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF THE USE OF ANIMALS FOR RESEARCH, AS WELL AS THE ETHICAL AND LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS WHEN USING THEM TO AVOID THE USELESS SACRIFICE OF ANIMALS AND ENCOURAGE REFINEMENT. TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE INTRODUCTION OF CURRENT AND ESSENTIAL TOPICS ABOUT THE USE OF LABORATORY ANIMALS AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP WITH RESEARCH.

SECAL´s Annual Scientific Meeting 2022

SECAL is organizing the X Annual Scientific Meeting in conjunction with the SECAL´s Annual General Assembly. This event will be hybrid. The on-site sessions will take at the main hall of the Jimenez Díaz Foundation in Madrid on November 16th, 2022. All sessions will be broadcast in streaming. Every two years, SECAL organizes a Scientific Meeting to animal technicians, animal caretakers, researchers, students and other personnel working in any field related to animal care and use in biomedical research. The event is totally free and open to everyone, both SECAL´s members and non-members. Although at the time of this request, the speakers of this conference have not been selected, the talks will be related with the “Culture of Animal Well-being” and will include the following sessions: 1) Practical Refinement 2) Personal management 3) Transparency and communication in animal research

EXPOBIOTERIOS (EB) 2022 Hybrid

ExpoBioterios (EB) Hybrid will be a face-to-face and virtual event. The Conference will be held in the University of Antioquia in Medellín – Colombia (face-to-face) and the streaming hosted on a platform that will enhance the interaction of the attendees with the speakers.
