Funding open access CC-BY publication in LAJ of the FELASA – EFAT WG report on “Harmonisation of Education, Training and CPD for laboratory animal caretakers and technicians”

The joint Working Group FELASA-EFAT on “Harmonisation of education, training and CPD for laboratory animal caretakers and technicians” has finalized the work. The members of the Working Group, Klas Abelson (Convenor), Tereasa De La Cueva, Friedemann Pohlig, Delphine Grézel, Vasileios Ntafis, Ana Isabel Santos, Martin Heath, Pim Rooymans, Glyn Fisher, Charlie Chambers have written the report which was submitted to “Laboratory Animals” (LA-23-051) for publication. FELASA working group reports must not be submitted for publication without approval of the FELASA Member Delegates (MDs). Therefore, the draft of the present report was distributed to FELASA Member Associations for revision and comments. The reviewers are experts in the field. Furthermore, the draft has also been circulated among members of EFAT for further comments and revisions. The authors have addressed all comments made by the reviewers and FELASA MDs and the Executive Committee (EC) has approved the present version of the report. It is mandatory that FELASA WG manuscript must published as peer reviewed scientific papers with open access CC-BY in order to reach immediately the maximum number of professionals involved in the use of laboratory animals – and to include a reprint on the FELASA website. FELASA is a no-profit organization with limited resources. The money necessary for covering open access fees of FELASA recommendations will reduce the reserves for other tasks. This specific action is fully coincident with the aims of Laboratory Animals Limited to promote education and training in laboratory animal science, medicine, technology, and welfare.

TRAINING IN EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN & STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF BIOSCIENCE & BIOMEDICAL EXPERIMENTS IN ETHIOPIA

Africa has an extreme shortage of individuals with the knowledge and skills to care for and use research animals. This deficit is a Grand Challenge in itself, hindering the ability of Africa to undertake world-leading research to address its specific health challenges. Opportunities for education and training in research animal sciences across the continent are extremely fragmented and restricted to specific countries. Animal ethics committees are in their infancy or non-existent. There have been limited interventions, led principally by the applicants, to address this knowledge and skills Grand Challenge. However, traditional face to face training modalities can’t cover long term lagged need of the community and professionals in African context in general and Ethiopian context in particular. Therefore, setting up intensive three days training for Ethiopian scientists and biomedical graduate students has a paramount role to improve biomedical research and an ethical review process and to give proper attention to animal welfare. The objective of this three days intensive training on experimental design course is to present basic facts and principles that are essential to establish optimal number animals for the humane use and care of animals and basic biomedical research principles for the quality of research. Responsible research requires better design of experimental activity. The total budget required is 3500 euro only.

Development and organization of The Second Hybrid Conference on the Science of Laboratory Animals in Latin America. ExpoBioterios Hybrid 2023 – Xochimilco – Mexico.

ExpoBioterios (EB) Hybrid will be a face-to-face and virtual event. The Conference will be held in the Metropolitan Autonomous University in Xochimilco – Mexico (face-to-face) and the streaming hosted on a platform that will enhance the interaction of the attendees with the speakers. The scheduled days for the event will be June 14th, 15th and 16th, 2023.The presentations will be in spanish. These talks will be available on-demand for the attendees.Registration for EB has a cost of US $ 30-75. However, we will provide scholarships for all those who need support.Five benefits that ExpoBioterios brings to the science of laboratory animals.1- Change of perspective: The current world situation is causing many of the scientific conferences that allow the training of personnel working in animal science to be diminished by its cancellation. EB Hybrid ensures a change in the way of developing scientific events, favoring professional growth and training of personnel working in the field of animal science.2- Receive immediate feedback: At EB Hybrid the divulgation of animal science has the advantage of being able to receive almost immediate feedback. You can participate in forums, chat with colleagues around the world, propose topics and you can quickly receive a response, a comment, advice or constructive criticism. All this quickly improves and refines the concepts and skills of the staff working in the field of the laboratory animal. You will be able to share with colleagues about your area of research, work or topics of interest. 3- Interrelationships: Leaving your animal facility to a virtual space, communicating your poster to a different audience and receiving their response, asking the speaker, all this allows creating interrelationships, both personal and between specialties, that connect the assistant with professionals from other specialties. 4- Posters: EB Hybrid attendees can present their posters, participants can easily find them through a search engine by title, subject or author. You can see the full image, or the summary or summary of the free work. In addition, they can leave comments to contact the main author. This will allow scientific divulgation in the region to continue at a good pace, even during a pandemic. 5- Commercial promoter of the region: EB Hybrid will have a trade show area at the height of any international event. This allows reactivating the commercial sector related to animal science.

Scientific session on the Future of Communication and Publishing in Laboratory Animals. 60Th Anniversary LASA Meeting ( Nov 2023)

LAL sponsorship for a scientific session on the Future of Communication and Publishing in Laboratory Animals, as one of the key session to celebrate the 60th anniversary of LASA ( Laboratory Animals Science Association), in 2023. The meeting programme aims to reflect on key future challenges for the laboratory animal science field. Dissemination of work in laboratory animal science is key to promote best animal care and welfare, to support the development on alternative approaches, and strengthen the public’s understanding of such valuable work. For this session, we propose a keynote speaker addressing “How does science communication need to adapt to changing dissemination technologies?” followed by session on how to support animal technologist to disseminate their work, discussing publishing resources such as technical reports or preprint publishing. LAL via their Laboratory Animals Journal continues to be an instrumental platform for promoting welfare and 3Rs developments.
