FIRST INTENSIVE LABORATORY ANIMAL SCIENCE COURSE IN KENYA HOSTED BY EGERTON UNIVERSITY-KENYA IN COLLABORATION WITH UTRECHT UNIVERSITY-NETHERLANDS

Laboratory animal science remains under developed in Kenya despite exponential use of laboratory animals in research and education. The intended course will be the first intensive laboratory animal course (LAS) in Kenya. The course will target scientists, technicians, post graduate students and academic staff working with animals in research and education. The purpose is to create a nucleus and a community of practice that can act as trainers of trainers in laboratory animal science in Kenya. Majorly, the course will be facilitated by seasoned trainers from Utrecht University in Netherlands led by Prof Vera Baumans. Competent local trainers will facilitate some sessions as well. This two weeks course will be hosted by the Department of Veterinary Anatomy and Physiology, Egerton University and will be locally organized by Dr. Samuel Nderitu Nyaga.

Modernization and upgrade of theoretical e-learning training for English speakers planning to work with laboratory animals at Polish research institutions

The International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology in Warsaw is the only Polish research institution that offers continuous theoretical training in English for international scientists planning to perform experimental work with laboratory animals in Poland. The course, developed in 2016 as an internal course for own employees not speaking Polish, since 2022 is open to all foreigners as a non-profit e-learning training. The course meets the requirements of national and European law on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes and has accreditation of PolLASA (the Polish member of FELASA). The project will result in much needed modernization and upgrade of this training. We intend to incorporate updated material of European quality and organize the course in more user-friendly manner. We want to add emphasis on practical applications of the 3Rs principles and alternative methods. The ameliorated course will improve qualifications of researchers and wellbeing of animals.

Translation of hands-on practicals into multimodal tutorials for transformative learning and laboratory training in future-focused neuroscience

This project aims to develop educational materials and translate them into laboratory course. We will design and create audiovisual tutorials to teach several techniques in modern neuroscience research, including viral strategy approaches, live brain tissue preparations, and multiplex imaging, which are essential and widely used in state-of-the-art science. The materials will be implemented in the MSc module in neuroscience focused on applied experimental approaches in health and disease at University College London. They will enhance the education and training of students who typically lack experience in laboratory studies and come from a wide range of backgrounds. The tutorials developed by trained researchers will promote the 3Rs, given the complex nature of techniques and breakthrough technologies used in current neuroscience; they will improve the educational process for better learning outcomes. This will help advance future-oriented neuroscience education and promote transformative practices in laboratory animal science.

Attend a course in Master of Laboratory Animal Science and Welfare, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona – Spain

The program is specifically designed for veterinarian responsibly in situ of the welfare and care of animals. The program is taken in modules and aim to provide the necessary expertise in all relevant areas in laboratory animal Science that allows professional excellence and specialization. Each module of the course can be completed independently and some of them lead to obtaining accreditation for other functions such as performing procedures, project and procedures design or project evaluation. The course is designed to be completed in three years and to be fully compatible with a full-time job. The modules are intensive and two are run each year lasting between 1-2 weeks. In this way, the course can accommodate students who live outside Barcelona.

ACURET Cage Consortium – Phase-II

ACURET evolved a Cage Consortium project, to seek the support and assistance of Institutions and Industry abroad to donate used but functional ‘fit for purpose’ cages and other research equipment. These will be distributed to Institutions in Africa following an application process to improve lab animal welfare and the quality of science from developing countries. This application is the Phase-II in continuation of the approved project LP501 2022, following a progress report submitted on May 12th, 2023, and a request for the Phase – II submitted on May 19th ,2023. The next Phase of the project will provide opportunity to (i) Purchase packaging materials and package the collected 2600 cages and accessories in boxes for protected transportation. (ii) Crate the metal racks and bedding waste disposal machine for safe shipping. (iii) Purchase a 20ft container in which the packed boxes and racks will be loaded for shipping to Lagos Nigeria. (iv) Shipping of the container from Chelmsford, Essex to Lagos, Nigeria.
