SECAL Scientific meeting

SECAL is organizing the XI Annual Scientific Meeting in conjunction with the SECAL´s Annual General Assembly. This event will be hybrid. The on-site sessions will take place at the main hall of the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (https://www.prbb.org) on November 12th, 2024. All sessions will be broadcast in streaming. Every two years, SECAL organizes a Scientific Meeting to animal technicians, animal caretakers, researchers, students and other personnel working in any field related to animal care and use in biomedical research. The event is totally free and open to everyone, both SECAL´s members and non-members. Talks will be related with the “New Challenges in Health Monitoring” and will include the following sessions: 1) Health Monitoring in rodent and non-rodent species 2) Health Monitoring in large animals 3) Health Monitoring in NHP

Support for AISAL XXX congress

In October 2024, the Italian Association for Laboratory Animal Sciences (AISAL) is organizing its 30th Annual congress, focused on Complementarity of the different resources in preclinical research. The grant from Laboratory Animals LTD will be used to support keynote speakers’ travel expenses and accommodation for the session on complementarity of methods used in preclinical research. AISAL has started the process to have the XXX Congress accredited by the National Competent Authority (NCA). In 2023, the AISAL congress received as well accreditation by the NCA (Italian Ministry of Health). The congress will be accredited for core Module No 1 ‘National legislation’, therefore being of interest for all functions involved in preclinical research. The accreditation will be valid for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) registration of all stakeholders.

Support for delivering the 18th FRAME/UoN Training School in Experimental Design & Statistical Analysis of Bioscience & Biomedical Experiments in Dublin.

The FRAME/UoN Training School in Experimental Design aims to increase awareness among scientists about the need to consider opportunities to replace animal models, reduce animal numbers in experiments and to refine procedures. Participants gain a better understanding of how to properly design and effectively analyse their experimental programmes so that they can go on to produce higher quality science, which has made the most efficient use of a minimum number of animals. The programme is structured to lead the participants from simple experimental design and statistical ideas, through more complex methods and analysis to effective presentation of findings. Participants are also able to discuss their own research problems/experiences with the Training School tutors. This interactive approach strengthens and supplements the information given in the more traditional lectures and creates a collaborative and active learning environment. The residential nature of the School also fosters networking and dissemination of information between participants.

Funding open access CC-BY publication in LAJ of the FELASA – EFAT WG report on “FELASA Working Group report: Capture and transport of live cephalopods – recommendations for scientific purposes”

The FELASA Working Group on “Capture and transport of live cephalopods – recommendations for scientific purposes” had published the short version of the report on Laboratory Animals Journal https://doi.org/10.1177/00236772231176347. The members of the Working Group, António Sykes (Convenor), Viola Galligioni, Stuart Hetherington, Juan Estefanell Ucha, Graziano Fiorito, João Correia, João Pereira, Andre Ferreira had written the report, now available online. As all FELASA working group reports, before submitted for publication they need the approval of the FELASA Member Delegates (MDs). Therefore, the draft of the report was distributed to FELASA Member Associations for revision and comments. The reviewers are experts in the field. The authors have addressed all comments made by the reviewers and FELASA MDs and the Executive Committee (EC) has approved the version of the report now published. Notably a longer version of this report is now available on Cephalopods Research website https://www.cephalopodresearch.org/projects/publications/ It is mandatory that FELASA WG manuscript must published as peer reviewed scientific papers with open access CC-BY in order to reach immediately the maximum number of professionals involved in the use of laboratory animals – and to include a reprint on the FELASA website. FELASA is a no-profit organization with limited resources. The money necessary for covering open access fees of FELASA recommendations will reduce the reserves for other tasks. This specific action is fully coincident with the aims of Laboratory Animals Limited to promote education and training in laboratory animal science, medicine, technology, and welfare.
