Attend the 2026 ESLAV ECLAM Summer School on Anesthesia, Analgesia and Euthanasia in Laboratory Animals

am applying for support to attend the 2026 ESLAV‑ECLAM Summer School “Anesthesia, Analgesia and Euthanasia in Laboratory Animals”, held from 20–23 July 2026 at the Institute of Physiology, CAS, in Prague. This international training programme provides advanced and up‑to‑date theoretical and practical instruction in anaesthesia, multimodal analgesia, pain assessment, peri‑operative monitoring and humane euthanasia across multiple laboratory species, including rodents, rabbits, fish and larger animals. Participation in this course will enhance technical competence and support the refinement of procedures carried out at the University of Coimbra’s Laboratory Animal Facility. The knowledge gained will contribute to improved welfare outcomes and will be disseminated locally through practical training, updated internal guidance and support to new users and students.

Attend a course in Genome engineering: CRISPR/Cas in cells and mice

I will use the funding to attend the course “Genome engineering: CRISPR/Cas in cells and mice” held by the EMBL Advanced Training Centre in Heidelberg in December 2025. Through this course, I expect to learn how to design a robust plan for mouse model generation and to understand which aspects require particular attention throughout the process. The hands-on experience will help me become more independent and apply well-founded criteria when conducting experiments at my institution, directly enhancing the performance and quality of my PhD research. Additionally, the course is taught by leading experts in the field and offers a valuable opportunity to exchange scientific ideas with instructors and fellow participants. I am committed to sharing the knowledge and skills I gain with my colleagues and applying them to ongoing and future projects at my institution.

Attend a course in Master of Laboratory Animal Science and Welfare, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona – Spain

I aim to complete a master’s degree in laboratory animal science at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona within two years. I will attend the practical modules in the two annual face-to-face meetings and present a final project involving ethics in the use of animals using the same research area that we work on here at the Federal University of Bahia: photodynamic therapy (PDT). The practice consists of using light combined with a photosensitizer to promote relief in the treatment of pain and the elimination of pathogenic microorganisms.
